Grain Loading by Michael Kashalos achieved the highest price
Fierce bidding for a painting by Angelos Yiallinas
Nicosia, Tuesday 22 December – The 28th auction of the Psatharis
Auction House took in a total of €311.456. Of the 147 lots
offered, the sale saw a sell through rate of 74% percent by lot
(110 works sold) and 84 per cent by value. Of the 99 works by
Cypriot artists, a number of 71 were sold recording a rate of
71% by lot. Works by Greek painters saw an impressive sell
through rate at 84% by lot with 39 paintings sold out of a total
of 46.
“Despite the enormous difficulties facing the global economy due
to the pandemic, the art auctions market is proving to be one of
the most resilient and adaptable sectors in the market,” said
Nikos Psatharis, Founder of the Auction House.
The auction was held on the 2nd of December at the Landmark
Hotel in Nicosia through live streaming and by telephone and
written bids.
“The results of the action show that the art auction audiences
are fully adjusted to live streaming as a new way of holding an
auction sale, adding to the resilience of the market and easing
its transition to a digitized future,” added Psatharis.
The highest-priced lot of the evening was Cypriot naive Michael
Kashalo’s Grain loading which sold for €38.854 far surpassing
the estimate of €19.000. Christos Christou’s The Party achieved
the second highest price at €11.928 followed by Solomos
Frangoullides’s Mountainous Village at €8.342. Giannis Gaitis’s
Cyclists achieved €8.342 and Demetris Mytaras’s Figures fetched
€7.746.
Tense bidding
The bright spot of the evening was Litany at the village of
Viros – Corfu by Greek artist Angelos Yiallinas. After 24 bids
it leapt past its estimate of €3.000 to €8.462. Bidding was
heated also for Xanthos Hatzisoteriou’s Crucifixion which after
17 bids more than doubled its estimate of €3.000 to €8.104 as
well as for Fotos Hatzisoteriou’s The Village which achieved
€5.959 after 12 bids. Alkis Keramidas’s Return to the village
sold for €4.767 after 10 bids and Viktor Ioannides’s Female
Figure achieved €2.265 after 5 bids.
Andreas Ladomatos’s Window with Pink Oleander sold within its
estimates for €6.197. Andreas Karayan’s Lilies in a Pot fetched
€6.555 and a painting by Lefteris Economou from the series
Coffee Houses of Pella Pais also achieved €6.555. Lower spenders
showed robust demand for the etchings of Telemachos Kanthos with
Tylleria’s Thorn bushes fetching €1.906 after 17 bids and Women
in the Fields achieving €1.787 after 16 bids.
