CYPRUS PHILATELIC HISTORY

Cyprus Philatelic History began in 1343 with the first known letter from Famagusta to Constantinople. Foreign mail was carried by  the captain of various ships and the foreign consulates  in Larnaca. Privately hired muleteers carried island mail.

In 1837, the Austrian Lloyd opened an agency in Larnaca, as a shipping company. A post office was immediately established to carry mail via Austrian Lloyd steamers. This post office accommodated in the Austria consulate in Larnaca. The oldest recorded cover (stamp less) bearing the straight line LARNACA postmark, is dated 4-4-1845. This post mark is found in both blue and black imprints (inks). During the period, very few covers bearing the company’s cachet LARNACA AGENCIA DEL LLOUD AUSTRIA CO (in oval)are found and these are very rare.

Stamps were used to prepay postage circa 1864, originally the Lombardo – Venetian were used, being later replaced by the regular Levant Austrian issues, all in  Soldi currency and as rule, were cancelled by the circular dated stamp LARNACCA DI CIPRO (day and moth only). We rarely find both the Lombardo Venetian stamps tied to cover with the straight line LARNACA referred to above.

The postal rates were quite complex during the period prior to U.P.U. From 1-1-1866 the rates were fixed to 10 soldi for covers from Levant, 15 Soldi to Austria and 10 Soldi for registration fees.

Covers posted in town and to the rest of the island are, as a rule, stamp less and in prepayment, part payment or unpaid letters leaving payment to destination, are postage designated in manuscript.

They all bear the LARNACCA DI CYPRO circular dated stamp. The Austrian post office closed down immediately after the British took over the administration of the island, July 1878.

In 1871, a Turkish post office was established in Nicosia and few covers and contemporary stamps are cancelled KIBRIS in old Turkish script. The turn over of this post office was very low and it ceased its operation together with the Austrian post office.

From July 1878 to March 1880, stamps of  Great Britain  were used to frank the mail both inland and foreign. As of 1-4-1880 until 30-6-1881, the stamps of Great Britain were overprinted and or surcharged with CYPRUS and from 1-7-1881 until 16-8-1960 stamps with the portrait of the English monarch of the period  were used for all mail. During the period of British post office of Cyprus was reporting to the Post Master General, in London.

In 1960, Cyprus becomes an independent state, a member of U.P.U. and issues its own stamps.
