Peter Oliver 1927 - 2006
The artist Peter Oliver was born in Jersey in 1927. He
studied at the Exeter School of Art and then in
Liverpool. While still a student he showed at the RBA
and the Redfern Gallery. And was included in further
mixed shows at New Art Centre. Hamet Gallery and the
City Art Gallery, Salford.
Peter was an incredibly successful artist having regular
sell out exhibitions at his London Galleries. Between
1955 and 1963 he had five solo shows at the Redfern
Gallery and at the Mercury Gallery in 1965. With the
Tate being very active in purchasing his work. A
retrospective exhibition of his work was held in 1994 at
Anthony Hepworth Fine Art in Bath. His work is
represented in a number of public collections including
the Tate Gallery, the Courtauld Institute, Government
Art Collection and Manchester City Art Gallery.
Teacher
Peter Oliver was also a highly regarded teacher, having
taught many of the great artists in the North West
whilst being head of art at the Manchester High School
of Art. Peter also went on to become the government
senior advisor on Art & Ceramics.
There are numerous Peter Oliver paintings in Public
Collections.
